Why Was The American Flag Called Old Glory?

According to notes in history, Captain William Driver is credited for being the one who gave the American Flag its other name “Old Glory”. The captain came from Massachusetts and also stayed most of his time in Nashville, Tennessee if he weren’t traveling the seas. Whenever he traveled in his ship, he would display the Old Glory flag on top of the mast and also in all major areas upon landing. The banner quickly gained recognition. Originally, the flag only featured 34 stars which were equal to the total of Union states in 1861. Driver stayed in Tennessee in 1837.

In 1861, the Civil War began and Tennessee was removed from the Union. Captain William Driver at this point was highly concerned that the ally might take and destroy the Old Glory. According to a rare historical account, Driver together with a number of local women sewed the flag into a pillow to make sure that the Old Glory would be preserved long after the war.

Just after one year, the Union gained control over Nashville again so Captain Driver took out the Old Glory and displayed it from the spire of the State Capitol. The 6th Ohio Regiment which belonged to the Federal troops saw the flag and immediately adopted it as their official motto.

These are just a number of the historical events surrounding the Old Glory. It shows how people fought hard to ensure that the US flag remained a vital part of our nation until today.
