How Long Should An American Flag Last?

The American flag is one of the items that are often owned by every American citizen and admirers of the country.  However, only a few flag owners thought how long an American flag can survive.

According to the US Government, they expect a flag to last until 90 days if it is used on a daily basis from day to night but excluding periods of severe weather conditions. Flags that are raised on a daytime basis are expected to have longer life than those raised 24/7.

Various reasons can affect the lifespan of a flag. These are the time, sun’s heat, rain, wind and negative aerial factors.

There are some practical tips to increase the lifespan of your flag:

Remove the flag before or during bad weather condition.

Be cautious when there are storms. Wind is much stronger during this time and can cause it to shrivel and spread out which can reduce the strength of the fabric.

Same effect can occur during heavy rains too. As the water adds weight, it can cause the fabric to expand and shrink upon drying. It is better to take down the flag to dry as the flag gets wet and let it dry on a flat surface to keep its shape.

Have a regular schedule for cleaning.

Flags that are often displayed outdoor absorb and may become new homes of dirt and all other aerial pollutants. American flag can remain fresh looking by hand or laundry wash in water and detergent soap.

The Lifespan of an American Flag

Through the years, the American flag is expected to go through different changes such as deteriorating and normal wear and tear. There are several reasons why flags will deteriorate through the years.

The United States government generally comes up with flags that last 3 months when used daily from morning until night. These may be taken down during harsh weather conditions. The flags that are expected to be displayed nonstop will have a shorter lifespan compared to those taken down at sunset.

There are several things that can ruin the flag like rain, dirt, wind, sunlight and other air pollutants. The flag should be taken down and kept stored during bad weather to keep it intact for many months.

You can also try several other methods to increase the lifespan of the American flag.

First of all, keep it protected from harsh weather conditions by taking it down before a storm or during sunset.

The wind can be very powerful and rip the flag in a storm. High winds also let the flag expand and change into different shapes and forms as it waves and flaps in the wind. Over time, the fabric will be more prone to other outdoor elements. Should the flag get wet, take it down to dry. Wash and dry it. The flag should be dried on a flat surface instead of being left out to hang and dry.

Regular cleaning also enhances its lifespan.

Use warm water and mild soap when cleaning the American flag.

The flag did not retain its same look back when it started. Its seal had evolved and undergone several modifications during 1980s. The first official Minnesota state flag was hoisted in 1893 designed by the Amelia Hyde Center. This time the flag has two sides, white and light blue. The seal remained located at the middle with the design of white moccasin flowers on the blue field.

Traditional Custom Flags

Some things in this world may seem ordinary because we often see them in our lives on a regular basis. One of the things we’ll be talking about is something that has been used over a thousand years ago and will still be used in many more years to come no matter how our technology may evolve. This thing I am talking about is a custom flag, a cloth material with distinct design usually rectangular in shape that is usually raised and waved during specific occasions.

Custom flags are usually seen being displayed and raised in schools, public and private offices and even in residences. These are more evident in suburban areas wherein there are many structures of commercial institutions. It is usually placed outdoors such as the front of government buildings.

These flags vary in designs and sizes depending on the purpose of the flag. Some are displayed to show reverence to their country (country flag), to represent a company or a group, to give signals or to promote something like when announcing a sale in a store to attract passers-by.

Makers of custom flag are particular to the type of fabric to use depending where the flag be displayed whether indoor or outdoor, combination of colors and design and symbols whether it can effectively represent what it is meant to stand for, size and shape of the material and the type of flag pole a flag must be matched with. Makers of outdoor flags make sure the quality is superior.

The Controversial Mississippi State Flag

America first added Mississippi into the Union as its 20th state in 1817. The first flag flown by the new state was referred to as the Bonnie Blue Flag which had a basic design. It had a blue background and one white star in the middle. The flag was beautiful even though the design was simple and was used for many decades until 1861. Later on, the Mississippi flag would undergo big changes.

In 1861, Mississippi decided to sever its ties with the Union and become an independent state. The Mississippi Secession Convention also intended to show a new flag in lieu of its separation. The Magnolia Flag featuring a magnolia tree, substituted the old Bonnie Blue Flag. The design of the Bonnie Blue Flag, however, remained on the upper corner of the new flag. The magnolia tree is one of the main features of the state. The flag was used widely by troops during the Civil War.

In 1894, Mississippi raised its second flag which is one of the most controversial in America’s history. The new flag was known as the Confederate Battle Flag or Rebel Flag of the South. It had a union square, featuring 13 white stars, a red canton and blue cross on one upper portion. The 13 stars has been misinterpreted many times as some say that these stand for the states the seceded while others say that it represents the 13 colonies. The fact is, the stars actually stood for the 13 colonies. Today, the flag is still seen in several places across the state and globe.

The Evolution of Message Flags

Flags have many uses and there are other names for it such as country flags, custom flags, message flags, and many more. Flags have come into existence thousand years ago even before civilization took place. This is a material useful to send messages. Now, what used to be message flags have evolved into something that represent groups, companies, territories, religion, teams, and more.

Still, flag maintain some of its purpose which is more than to represent something but to give signals just like in maritime situations. Before civilization period flags are used to send signals to others such as giving warnings. Or country flags were often used in naval or military territories only and never used as home decorations. Unlike these days, often you get to see country flags and custom-made flags in or outside private residences, at malls, schools, hotels and many more.

Let me just give random fun facts about flags. The oldest flag design being used today is the country flag of Dannenbrog of Denmark. This was made in the 13th century.  The only country that doesn’t have the traditional rectangular flag shape is Nepal. Its flag has two triangular shaped cloth stacked on top of each other. The largest flag ever waved until today is the flag of Brazil which many people adore.

Flags, no matter the design, color, size and shape, are made with so much consideration in order to provide its purpose which is to relay a message; a message to represent, to give respect, to show signs or meaning, to promote, to give a mark, and more.

The Nepalese banner features a couple of triangles placed on top of each other. When people find unique features on the flag, they can easily remember these. Many advertising flags also feature special designs and colors to easily attract clients regardless of the location. There are a number of famous designs for promotional flags. Custom Flags for Life

When you look at different custom flags, you will notice unique elements incorporated into the design, particularly heraldic flags. The colors, symbols and emblems on the banner usually connote a very rich background. Today, promotional flags used by marketers and business owners may not use the same elements, but there are still relative techniques that are still used to grab the attention of people everywhere.

Many flags feature bright and colored flags that will immediately stand out from several other types of advertising materials. There are materials that easily put clients at ease and contain short but effective messages. There are even other flags that provide short information or send a message together with details about a new product or company.

A person who is well-educated on flags is known as a vexillographer and can provide much information.

In the United States, some federal flags can be worn and torn after being used constantly for several months. These should be disposed of in the right way by showing it the reverence it deserves. The flag should be burned and not thrown in the trash or cut into pieces. Some flags are meant to last for years, being made of materials that can withstand the sun, wind and rain. There are other flags that are made to catch the attention of customers for business purposes. Consider the factors you need before getting any type of flag and talk to a reputable manufacturer for the best quality and design.
