Importance of the American Flag

The two most common monikers or nicknames of the American flag are the ‘Old Glory’ and ‘Star Spangled Banner’. It is perhaps the most recognized and popular flag throughout the globe. It holds its own identifying visage since the country it represents – the United States of America – is not the most, is definitely one of the most powerful nations. Its dominance over its territory, as well as its influence overseas in terms of social, economic, political, military, and other areas of interaction is second to none.

Since its early roots from the pilgrims and colonists of the New World, and to the staunch and strongly declared independence from the European powers, it has come to be regarded as a first world country, capable of contributing greatly to peace and a modern world order. Even with the American flag’s simplicity in design – striped red and white with a field of blue encapsulating fifty plain white stars – it represents something of a unified outcome of fifty different states that would comprise a great and powerful nation.

Of course we know the awesome outcomes that have occurred since the battle for independence against the monarchy in 1776 wherein the continentals eventually won against the British rule. Since then, whenever the American flag would be hoisted high above the sky, it only means independence and liberty to the place. Different values and rights of the people are embodied in the rectangular entity – blood, sweat, liberty, freedom, justice, equality, independence, and all others that make every citizen proud to be part of the American sovereign.

Consecration of the American Flag

It takes a true patriot and citizen to be able to know and inculcate the value of consecrating the American flag. while most of the citizens would be able to know a couple of basic things to show their love for the flag such as keeping it flying up the pole and never getting it soiled, there are certain specific rules and laws that are made to keep it valued. In a country where federal governance is the way of keeping peace and order, the different states have their own little power to make laws that are despite their exclusivity, are still conforming to the higher authority of the constitution.

For instance, there are some states out of the total 50 there are which goes a little beyond the exclusive American flag only focus. Those that are typically found in the southern states have included laws to also observe the proper treatment and rendered respect to the confederate flag. Due to the historical implication of the presence of the confederate flag, especially during the American civil war, some states are keen on observing the right of representation and anti discrimination.

There are laws in some states that carry a harsher penalty if ever a person is found guilty of desecrating a nationalistic flag such as the American flag. Even state flags are considered to be at par when commanding respect from its sovereign’s citizenry. Some carry a longer term in detention while others are just considered minor offenses and are fined. Nevertheless, one thing is common among all the states – it is to defend and uphold the pride and dignity of the national flags among others.

Avoiding Desecration of the American Flag

The protection of the American flag is indicated in the Flag Code. This is a series of laws specifically made to avoid the desecration of the national flag, and create a basis for national compliance. Not only does this state on how to properly carry and bear a flag of the United States, but also indicates the things NOT to do which may be considered as violations. The US flag is a national treasure and should be rendered the highest form of respect. Anything done that would render the opposite shall be considered a violation of the law and meted with the appropriate sanctions.

Out of the 50 states, there are 48 of which have specific laws that are considered to be under the flag code. Since each state has a certain level of jurisdiction with its internal laws, these vary across the nation. Some are more severe when implementing punishments while some are more extreme in considering some specific stipulations as unlawful. For instance, even a jokingly stated derogatory remark to the American flag is considered a criminal offense.

It is therefore safe to conclude that respect and honor is given to the American flag at all times. Never should there be a public derogatory remark or actual physical defacement. Do not allow it to be dirtied, stepped on, mutilated, or damaged. Keep intentions always in the clear. It is better to play safe and respectful at all times. After all, the American flag is a representation of your own existence anyway.
