Liberian Flags & Flag Poles

In Africa, you will find a state called Liberia. It was established during the 1800s and made to offer new opportunities and more importantly, a place to live for slaves who were freed from their previous masters. Many people wanted to go back to Africa after serving in different areas of the world.

Liberia was freed in 1847 and featured a banner that looked a lot like the Old Glory. However, the United States flag features thirteen stripes, while the Liberian flag only has eleven. These eleven stripes stood for the eleven men who signed and approved the declaration of the independence of the country. The Liberian flag also features a single five-pointed star against a blue background compared to the fifty stars of the U.S. flag.

The white star against the blue background represents Liberia being the only free black African country at the time. The blue background represents the African continent. You will still see the flag waved and displayed in several places around the world. These are raised on top of wooden poles and other high places.

You will notice a dove with a scroll in the official coat of arms. This represents peace and goodwill. There is also a yellow rising sun and a ship moving towards land. These elements stand for the rebirth of a country. The hoe and plow stand for labor and hard work. The palm tree represents fertility. There is also a message saying “The love of liberty brought us here.” At the bottom of the Liberian flag, you will read “Republic of Liberia”.

American Flags for Regiments

John Adams created a very memorable mini-series on HBO which showed several American flags that represented different regiments during the Revolutionary War.

The flags were the pioneering designs of the current national flag. Many of these stood for regiments at war. You will see the Culpepper flag in the opening credits of the mini-series. The flag was particularly used to stand for the regiment of Colonel Patrick called the First Virginia Regiment which was composed of one hundred men in 1775. Colonel Stevens also brought around three hundred men from Culpepper Court House to Williamsburg from October to November 1775.

The way these men dressed were scary for many people. They marched to different parts of the country to push their ideals. Their hunting shirts had the words “Liberty or Death” in big white letters across the chest. Their hats had buck tails and their belts carried scalping knives and tomahawks.

The Grand Union flag is another commonly seen flag which is known as the very first American flag although its adoption by the Continental Congress was not made official. It is a shift from the British Meteor flag. You will find the white cross of St. Andrew and the red cross of St. George on the blue canton as well as thirteen stripes.

In the opening parts of the mini-series, you might find the Washington Cruisers flag too. The banner was especially used by George Washington to represent his squadron containing six schooners. He paid for the flag himself in 1775.

Improving Your Putting Approach

When putting, you have to consider the swing and grip carefully because these are not the same as the long drive. You have to prepare the grip by holding the putter or putting club in the palms of your hands. The idea is to minimize hand movement. When doing the long drive, the finger grip is different since you have to get more action from the wrist. The interlocking grip is a special grip in which the small finger of the right hand will interlock with the index finger of the other hand. It is one of the best grips for putting. You can also try the two approaches to know the difference. Use a golf club or another item with similar dimensions to compare the difference then try making mock swings in front of a mirror. Follow the guidelines properly or hire a golf coach.

Putting will require a gentler approach compared to the long drive. You have to prepare the swing well using your grip and good posture. Stay relaxed and aim to hit the ball so it moves towards the cup comfortably.

Once you reach the putting green, avoid delays when hitting the ball. You might get tense and make bad shots instead. Also check the golf flags to guide you in the right direction. Your body should stay relaxed. Breathe in and then exhale as you hit the ball. Draw an imaginary line from the golf ball to the cup. The technique of putting is unique from the long drive because it requires a different grip and swing.
