Making a custom flag case is a worthwhile task which involves not necessarily intricate skills, but definitely utmost care and focus. Here are a few tips when making your own crafted output.

First of all, be gentle. Since the materials are rather light, it would be good to have a gentle touch with things. Especially when cutting up pieces of wood for the dimensions, getting too heavy on the cutting may cause errors on cuts or damage to the grain, or perhaps a damaged material altogether. You may also skip the cutting part and leave it to professional wood cutters, but why settle for it if you want to have an output you call your own, right?

When using binding materials for your wood and other stuff, you may want to choose small trim nails which are just a little over an inch long, and are quite small in diameter – perfect for the small-width food used. You may opt to use a nail gun or a brad gun to get the job done of hammering the nails into the grain.

When dealing with the back panel board of your custom flag case, you may want to consider using a luon or any similar wood paneling especially since you would be making drill holes for screws or wall mount fixtures and attachments later on.

Finally, never scrimp on the materials needed for this project such as pencil, circular saw, speed square, mitre saw, and the like – as the purpose and functionality of these equipment are essential to a proper and correct flag case output.

For the simple glass panel covering, you would have to know the measurements first. If you intend to place it inside a groove insertion in the wooden frame, you may add about a quarter of an inch to allocate 1/8th inch per side for groove insertion.

As you buy the wooden frame, it would be wise to buy an 8’ long cut, as you would be cutting them for the perimeter, with 45 degree angle cuts. As you begin forming the cover panel frame sides, you may want to create the groove on the inner side which is 1/8th inch deep. In order to do so, it would be ideal to use a table saw and measure the appropriate depth. As you make a pass with the wood for the frame, you may want to be gentle enough so as not to force it, but gently let the saw blade gradually make its depth to the wood.

Afterwards, put them together using appropriately small wooden nails, making sure that the groove in the interior sides are aligned. Before closing the whole frame, make sure that you do not forget to insert the glass panel and fit it snugly in the groove, before finally placing the last side of the wooden frame of your flag case.

Making a DIY flag case is quite a fun and worthwhile activity especially once you get to feel the worth and value of a personally crafted object. Here is the list of materials needed and a few instructions on how to fashion them for your project.

Another tip in sawing a ridge in the thin wood frame is to not force the blade of the saw. Slowly and surely, guide the wood on the table saw until the desired depth for the ridge insertion is made.

If you are feeling quite a bit innovative and crafty, you may choose to start your own project and make yourself a flag case instead of buying off from the market or internet. Choosing some layout design and instructions off the internet, you may already feel confident of making a good output. The steps are generally simple, but it takes better outcomes to remember some minor details and reminders to consider.

The very first thing you would have to remember is to provide a little allowance to the wood cuts as you create the base. Generally, the size is a quarter inch less of 17 from short to short point. In this manner, providing a little extra allowance for mistakes should peg you at around 20 by 20 inches.

Once you have the initial rough cut, you may already saw off the excess. In case of a perfect cut with the allowances, you would need to mark the 6” extra, and then have it turn around 180 degrees before cutting the short point once more. By this time you should be holding on to two pieces of 45 degree cuts.

The next tip in creating your own flag case is to make sure that the wood grain will be continuous when you attach them. This would provide a more presentable view to the eyes upon closer inspection. It is a rule of thumb to consider wood grain arrangement when working with wood so as to create a desired effect.
