Graduating from college after many years at times can make you miss how it is to be like a student again, most especially misses the schoolmates and friends you have gained. This is why alumni homecoming events are done on a yearly basis by most schools. This is one of the many ways of keeping in touch with old schoolmates and friends.

Similar to homecoming events, there are other activities in school that alumni can be welcomed to join. These are sports events that are usually for a big team such as basketball, volleyball and even cheering competitions. Alumni also attempts to be part of these activities because these are the highlighted sports activities in school even during their college days. These can remind them of ultimate team spirit, excitement and unity wherein they can shout their hearts out playing or cheering for their schools. This is why these are the events wherein bleachers are full, game tickets can be sold out fast, and of course there are many colorful school flags flown, waved and displayed by many supporters. Logos of schools are very evident not just thru flags and banners but through caps, masks and jersey outfits.

But for a calm type of alumni event, it would be thru homecomings. This is usually done in a school gym, in a restaurant, hotel function rooms or in a big house of an alumna, if someone offers. The alumni department makes sure that this yearly event can surely bring back the school spirit even thru simple school displays such as college flags.

In most cases, school alumni tend to be helpful or supportive of their alma mater. This support can be shown through donating cash or kind to a school-wide project, attending a party, organization meeting or meal-for-a-cause, or by merely purchasing items that have school logo such as shirts, ring or even a school flag. A popular form of expression of support is thru a school flag, usually in feather flag form. It is difficult to take away an alumni’s dedication from its school no matter how old they are because they spent many years in the institution. It is not just a place for learning theories but for some it is a place of learning life.

Flags that are custom-made for schools are usually bought in school stores. Speaking of stores like those, those are one of the many add-on and leisure or recreational structures in a school that are at times a product of alumni’s donation. Presenting donations or contributions can be a way of showing gratitude to a school or a way to give back.  Because there are many alumni who do this, some schools created a department just for alumni assistance and projects. This department is in charge of coordinating activities relating to alumni relations. It I thru this department where some new programs both academic and extra-curricular activities are initiated because it provides the necessary funds.

Because alumni who are very much still involved in school are at times can be seen in an alumni department, it is common to see school flags displayed. This gives a strong school spirit.

The Dominican Republic’s National Flag: The Cross and The Bible

People who are familiar with the “Star Spangled Banner” will know that it is related with the flag of the United States of America. There are 50 stars on the American flag which represent the 50 states. Other countries also feature at least one star on their flag. There is one country, however, that features a bible and cross instead – the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Republic flag feature the white, blue and red colors. These are known to have been passed from the Haitian flag, because Haiti used to reign supreme over the territory. Now, the colors are indicative of bloodshed, freedom and salvation. Many people believe that the founding father, Juan Pablo Duarte, picked the three colors and changed the position of the blue and red hues. He also added a big white cross to signify the people’s deep faith in God.

There is a special emblem located at the center of the national flag. In the middle, people will discover a bible and a cross. These represent the Roman Catholics because over 90 percent of the national population are devout Catholics.

There are four more flags presented with the Dominican Republic flag. There are small national flags placed on spears. Each on has a cross and bible around it. The four small replicas, however, do not include the middle emblem. People also like to make other versions influenced by the Dominican Republic flag. These are waved by people during parades and national holidays. Flags are also available in front of government buildings.
