Discussions About American Flags

The Confederate flag used to be known as a flag for rebels. It has

been part of many discussions especially involving the Southern states

of America. In 2000, protesters wanted to have the Confederate flag

taken down from its position at the state house of South Carolina.

Even a decade before that, a number of legislators in the south

suggested that it would be good for the state flags to remove the

symbols and other elements. Georgia and Mississippi actually have the

Confederate elements present. Many people continue to talk about the

matters that led to the creation of the Rebel flag. Many see it as a

sad symbol of a time when slavery was rampant throughout America,

especially in the south. Others see the flag as a symbol of reverence

and honor, standing for the soldiers who sacrificed their lives during

the Civil War.

In July 2000, the flag was removed formally since it was first hoisted

up in 1962. Many individuals also remember how the south tried so hard

to fight integration as evidenced by the flag. The 1994 GOP wanted to

retain the banner. However, in 2000, thousands of people gathered in

front of the South Carolina state house to officially take down the

flag. The flag was placed on top of a pole 30 feet high. The NAACP

succeeded in wanting to put the flag down.

Other Southern states have also been involved in the issues

surrounding the Confederate flag, although South Carolina is deemed as

one of the pioneers.

Arguments About American Flags

The Confederate flag was also called the rebel flag and has been the

subject of various debates. In 2000, there were arguments raised

regarding the removal of the Confederate flag from the state house of

South Carolina. During the 1990s until the 2000s, politicians in the

south suggested that the state flags be adjusted, which included

changing the symbols that appeared thereon. Mississippi and Georgia,

however, continued to use the symbol of the Confederate. Many people

began to research on what the symbols on the rebel flag actually mean.

Others say that the rebel flag represents pride and other virtues

worth fighting for. Others, however, are not so fond of the flag,

saying that it adheres to slavery in America.

In July 2000, the Confederate flag was removed from the state house of

South Carolina. The banner had been standing in the same place since

1962. Many people regard the flag as a symbol of the Civil War and

display it for commemoration purposes. Other people, regard it as a

symbol of how the south fought integration for almost four decades.

In 1994, the GOP opted to maintain the flag but 50,000 people

protested in front of the state house on the day of Martin Luther King

Jr. The mass of people wanted to take the flag down. The flag was

brought down from its lofty 30-foot pole at the monument. In July

2000, the flag was also brought down after NAACP protested.

Southern Carolina is one of the places that have controversies

surrounding the Confederate flag, which may have influenced other

states to initiate issues as well.

The Basic Components of a Flag

More than 4,000 years ago, custom flags were made of fine materials

like silk. The material was made to be durable and lightweight.

Before, flags were of excellent quality and can last for several

decades. People were also able to carry these for thousands of miles

because of the lightweight design. Silk was the preferred fabric for

making flags before.

Newer flags introduced a variety of materials. Examples are cotton,

nylon and polyester among others. These were also durable but a lot

cheaper compared to silk. Nylon is frequently used because it is

affordable and lasts a long time. Nylon is also lightweight so keeping

flags will not be burdensome. A big flag using nylon can easily be

placed inside a bag without much effort. The flag material has to be

lightweight so that the wind can conveniently let it fly to be seen by

everyone. Durability is an important aspect of modern flags to

withstand different weather conditions. Flags are expected to last for

decades, with some groups or families passing these on from generation

to generation.

Aside from nylon, polyester is also a preferred flag material. It is

more durable than nylon and can last long against direct sunlight and

heavy storms. Polyester is heavier but is still chosen by many because

it can last several decades, becoming a very good investment.

Polyester flags may either be woven or knitted.

Another type of material used to make flags is cotton. It is not as

frequently used compared to the other two. Cotton custom flags are

ideal for indoor use. These can also be displayed outside.

Popular Materials for Flags

Did you know that custom flags were created over 40 centuries ago?

Flags were originally made of a silk fabric, a material that is

lightweight but strong. It is a durable material because it can

withstand different weather conditions and can last long. It is not

heavy to carry too. This is an ideal material for a flag and that is

why silk is still being the top fabric for flags.

Flags nowadays are made of different materials. Among the materials,

the most commonly used are cotton, polyester and nylon. The most

popular of the three is nylon. Like silk, it is so lightweight. This

feature is very important because flags are made to move with the

wind. So no matter how large the size of a flag is, it is better if it

can fly easily. Another similarity of nylon from silk is that it is

also durable, a feature that is vital for a flag because flags are

mostly displayed outdoors. Flags must be able to surpass harsh weather

conditions. Another good feature of nylon is that it dries fast and

versatile.

Another common modern material is polyester. The difference from nylon

is that this is heavier but more durable to harsher weather

conditions. It can last longer than nylon. It is considered as the

most durable material for flag use.

Lastly, cotton is a modern flag material but less popular compared to

the previous two materials mentioned because it is less durable.

However, cotton can be used for custom flags that are used for

indoors.

The Different Uses of Flags

If you happen to be tasked to carry your official state flag, consider

it as a big honor. Only respectable and noteworthy individuals are

usually asked to carry the flag. When you go to other places or

countries, you will find it very attractive when the flags of

international organizations are put together. These are often

displayed on top of government buildings, museums, castles and

schools. International flags are also seen during world events and

major sports tournaments such as the World Cup or Olympics. When

countries play against each other, the players usually hang their

national banner around themselves to show how much they value their

country. It is also an excellent way to show your passion and loyalty

to your country of origin. Many fans will wave big and miniature flags

from the stands. Some will wear clothes, hats and scarves featuring

the national colors to show support to their home team. At the end of

the competition, the winning team will put a giant flag around the

players’ shoulders and run around the field. Pictures are taken of the

champions with the giant banner.

When you visit other countries, try to look for a flag shop and ask

about the elements and colors you see on the material. You can also

order custom flags to fit particular occasions. Flags are used in many

ways today aside from representing territories. Many people display

these in their front porch or lawn to show their patriotism. Others

present custom flags featuring their favorite sports team or group

they belong in.

Flags Are More Than For Government Use

A flag has come into existence centuries ago to serve a fundamental purpose which is to signify territorial boundaries. It is also designed to show or declare what territory or country it represents. It may be just a simple fabric that is raised or waved thru a pole, it can be hung as high as possible in order that people can see it from far distance. For those people who can see it from afar, aside that it signifies what territory the flag is at it can also describe the kinds of people who are within that territory.

Nowadays, flags are used for many purposes but the most common is to show honour and pride to the territory it represents, whether those are state flags or international flags. In America, each of the fiftystates has its own distinctive flag. Flags like these are usually seen at all government-owned buildings and at most schools too. These flags are uniquely designed and colors differ as well.

An example of this is the Colorado state flag. It plays with four colors. The two blue stripes represents the skies of the state, one white stripe represents the snow capped mountains, the red colored letter C stands for the name of the state itself. There is a golden colored disk inside the letter C that represents sunny abundance. Just like the Colorado flag, colors have relevance to the territories that flags represent. Even if the state has its own flag, the American flag must also be raised as a sign of pride and respect to their mother country.

Getting to Know the American Flag

The American flag is perhaps the most popular and well known national flag in the world. Whatever the size is, whatever the configuration is or the inspirational pattern any related flag is made out into, one would be able to identify that the stars and stripes are technically synonymous to the Old Glory. Even if, let us say that other flags have been created out of an honest to goodness original concept, anything that speaks of either red, white, and blue, coupled with stars and stripes would definitely have a notion that it was inspired by the Star Spangled Banner.

What is interesting to know about the American flag is the collection of small trivia tidbits that made it the flag that it is today. Even if we are all familiar that the flag represents one of the biggest superpowers of the world, there are still some information worth knowing.

For example, the flag of the United States is only to be displayed outdoors only until before dark. In case one would need to display the flag for a whole 24-hour duration, it may be done provided that the flag is kept lit either by a focal lamp, or any other similar illuminating device.

In addition, the orientation of the flag indicates the situation the bearer is in. having it upside down would indicate distress and danger and that the bearer is in need of immediate assistance.

Historically, the first nation other than the US which recognized its political sovereign was France. It may be noted that the latter helped the continentals achieve independence through wartime support.

Types of Materials for Flags

Everywhere we go, we see one or more types of flags or banners being displayed, providing us information or just indicating that their presence is felt. We see many flags of different shapes, color schemes, designs, symbols, and even the material or fabric that these are made out of.

One of the first materials to be made into flags was silk. It was ideal during early times especially as silk was a prime commodity for trade. This material was considered exotic in some areas and therefore had much more value. Creating flags out of this during those times was considered quite above commoners’ status. The material was ideal to be carried around, especially during long journeys or marches like that during war mainly because it was lightweight and had that shimmering effect. However, it was prone to difficulty when cleaning of stains and dirt.

Nylon became the next big thing when making flags. It was as durable or perhaps even more durable than silk, insignificantly weighed more, and was more adept in being maintained properly better even if stains and dirt got in the way. Also it had a significantly lower tendency to unravel unlike its predecessor.

As of present, the most common type of flag material I polyester. Even with its heavier and denser composition, it makes up for the sheer durability especially in outside weather conditions. Rain, wind, sunlight, whatever the conditions are, polyester has a huge advantage over other materials. Furthermore, it is easier to clean this fabric type without risking unraveling or destroying the fabric weave,.
