I was always nationalistic. I dreamed of being a soldier serving my own country and fighting under that military flag that symbolizes the defense of the country I love and treasure. When I was a kid I imagined being a colonel, making absolute and faultless strategies that would crush and make the pillars of the enemy crumble. I used to dream of delivering speeches to my co soldiers and boosting their morale while bringing home medals to my home.

I used to daydream about coming home and seeing my family happy to see me with all the medals attached to my uniform. I wanted to make those dreams a reality so I took an entrance exam for a military school. I gave it all I’ve got from the physical exam to the intellectual exam and hoped for the best. I prayed every single night to God so that I would be accepted and soon enough the results showed that I passed. I was registered to a military school, a school which held the pride of the whole country. The view and facilities were great and the military flags were hoisted on the center field. That day was a dream come true for me. Years passed and finally I graduated, it was time to serve and protect my country. I was nervous and the same time excited to go to the battlefield and join the heroes that would fight for the country.

At a time of war everything changes in an instant. No one comes back from a war unchanged. Now, I pray each night, asking help from God to release me from the bondage of war. The painful memories and the agony, I wish to be free once more, not knowing anything nor disturbed by nightmares. I want to sleep with no ghosts of the past haunting me.

The design of the state flag of Alabama was made in order to resemble the blue satire flag of the Confederate Battle flag. The said Confederate Battle flag was square-shaped while that of the Alabama state flag was sometimes shown as a square as well.

Some articles written in National Geographic in the year 1917 once said that the flag was based on the Battle flag whose shape was square. In 1987, Attorney General Don Siegelman said the flag of Alabama’s proper shape should be a rectangle. This is because of the derivation of the Battle flag had been repeated. It has also been depicted as rectangle in most publications already.

The flag of Alabama shows a crimson cross of St. Andrew which is put on in a field of white. The bars that form the cross on the flag is not less than six inches broad and is extended diagonally across the flag from side to side. There are those who would emulate the flag of Alabama but their cross does not go beyond 6 inches wide. These specifications do not fit to the required ones and thus be be classified as an illegal depiction of the flag of Alabama.

Other than the Confederate Battle flag, there are also other flags in which the state flag of Alabama has been seen as identical. It can be deemed similar to that of the flag of St. Patrick that is incorporated into the Union flag. It was being used by many countries around the world especially by the United Kingdom. It represents the union of both the kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland.

I was with some friends today – – some gay and lesbian friends to be exact. Actually, they are my group mates for the thesis that we are obliged to make. I was never used to joining these group of people because of the bad publicity that they have been getting. However, somehow I learned to accept and appreciate them. I don’t understand why some people despise them so much and why some hate them to death. These people that we sometimes avoid and neglect are actually more spectacular than the normal people we meet. My gay friend for one, is feminine and masculine at the same time. He can do hard labor like men but be artistic like a woman. These people are really amazing, we just have to dig deep to know them.

Anyway when we were in our friends home, particularly in his room, I noticed this pride flag. Out of curiosity I asked why is it hanging and why are my other friends amazed? He just simply said “it just represents our rights as us”. Well, I guess some little things can change some people’s life. Pride flags may be nothing to most of us but to my friends and the other gay and lesbian people, they mean a lot.

It somehow gives them pride and happiness. And this happiness radiates among us. Unfortunately, some people can be unappreciative or jealous of what these people can do. That’s why they can’t help but notice them and ridicule them. I guess it hurts to see those talents that you can never have, seeing them in unique people that will never be your friends. In my point of view, we should try to put ourselves in these people’s shoe even just for a day. This way then we can surely understand and see the beauty of being truly free.

Have you heard a flag that has a grizzly bear on it? Isn’t it cool that someone would choose an animal as bold as a bear to represent its state? The California state flag bears that symbol of a bear. Monarch as they would call, the bear is used as a basis for the California state flag.

I would think that animal representations and symbols would be cool and great for flags. In a military flag, it would be interesting that instead of putting an eagle, why not put a pack of wolves to symbolize unity or a silver back gorilla as a sign of absolute domination and power to overthrow the enemies? Since then, people used animals. It allowed them to incorporate their talents for hunting and build a name for themselves. For instance, a lot would choose to be a Cernian hind, which was one of the beasts that Artemis took care of —a golden horned bronze hoofed dear that likes to outrun arrows. It represents the speed, prestige and power anyone would want to have.

Another unique creature is the griffin. It is half eagle and half lion that sends good sign for those noblemen of today and of the past. It is remembering the custom crests of the olden days about the symbol of the griffin to let everyone know that they are respectable men and they are never to be messed with. In my homeland, I wish our flag would bear the symbol of the phoenix. It is a legendary bird that resurrects from it’s own ashes.

I might be considered a fanatic but sometimes I love trying on new radical ways and adding a little art that can make simple things more beautiful and vibrant.

The land down under! The flag of Australia wears this name. I don’t understand why it is called so but as I have heard this country is a beauty. Although the beaches of Australia are shark infested, the beaches and the swimming areas are relaxing. I have seen the movie entitled Australia starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman. As seen from my own eyes, most of the scenes depicted in the movie showed Australia as a desolate country. Heat, dust and the desert was all I could see. The movie as a whole was good, the story was awesome and the acting was superb. Knowing that the film was set in the 1930’s, my curiosity drove me to research about Australia. The new Australia is quite a beauty basing on the pictures and facts given on the internet. I saw this picture of the Super Pit which is Australia’s largest open cut gold mine. I could imagine people and machinery working at the site and from a hawk’s eye view they would look like ants and beetles.

Another thing that aroused my curiosity for this country was the news I once read. It was a job offer that would pay you as much as six digits and what you will do is survey an island that seemed like a paradise. I couldn’t remember if the government of Australia was shouldering the expenses for the salary or was it some rich guy who just wants to make someone happy. According to the news that I received, Australia is a pretty good place to work. Enjoying the scenery and the pay, Australia is one of the destinations of career-oriented people.

As of tonight, the flag of Australia is one of my destinations. Another two years in college won’t hurt and Australia won’t run. I just hope that a job awaits me there when I come.

The contest was led by Mrs.Ella Park Lawrence who was the state regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution during that time.

When the flag of Illinois was to become official, Governor Edward F. Dunne did not sign the bill but he did not also veto it. The Illinois flag became the official state flag for Illinois on July 6, 1915 which also followed its passage in the Illinois Senate and State House.

During the 1960s, there was a petition to have the name of the state of Illinois on the flag. This petition was spearheaded by Chief Petty Officer Bruce McDaniel. Bruce Mcdaniel said that his service during the Vietnam War, there were a lot of people who did not recognize the flag of the state of Illinois. On September 17, 1969, Governor Richard B. Ogilvie signed the addition of the name of the flag into a law. It was designed by Mrs. Sanford Hutchinson right after. The flag then became the official flag of Illinois on July 1, 1970.

The design, which has been emulated from the Great Seal of the United States was originally designed during the year 1819. When we look closely at the beak of the eagle we can see a message that says “State Sovereignty, National Union”. This is the official motto of the state.
