The Joys of Traveling

When we are done doing everything we could in our home towns, whether business or pleasure, then it is about time to venture to unfamiliar territory. Yes, it is time to travel. Traveling can give you great pleasure. Simply stepping on foreign soil and seeing a different world flag waving on a flagpole in the airport is enough to give a rush to many. Although it is quite fun and exciting, it is also very expensive and there are some things that we have to watch out for when we travel.

Traveling has its ups and downs. Going around the world and absorbing culture is quite fun when you think of it. However, some cultures conflict with our own. For example, what may be polite in Asia such as making a slurping sound with your soup, might be rude to people of other continents. There is also the idea of culture shock in which the traveler would experience anxiety and uneasiness when immersed in a totally new culture. Lastly there is homesickness. This rarely happens when we like the place but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen when we are enjoying ourselves. There are lots of things that could possibly remind us of home when we go out of the country to relax or go on business trips. It is best to weigh every aspect and expense of your trip before going out of the country because instead of relaxing, you might end up tenser than you would actually be if you have never left your home soil!

Read Me!

Print media has its quirks. Though a lot of people think it’s a simple job of recording and presenting whatever goes on in the world. What they don’t know is that it is often systemic and calculated. It may even be down to an exact science. It follows a strict workflow from getting ideas, to the actual publishing of the article, poster, newspaper, or banner.

These days, we are visually oriented. Newspapers are no longer restricted to type without images. In olden days, printing presses had a hard time printing images. These days, each story has to have an accompanying story. Press conferences are also held for the gathering of information especially for important people. If you see a table with a custom table banner as a table cloth, then most likely it is a press conference.

One quick way of presenting information is the use of billboards and street banners. These come in the form of large, concise and visually appealing signs that we usually see on roadsides, on buildings and so on. Because of their concise nature, the readers won’t need to stress themselves to read details. A banner or billboard should be able to catch the attention of the audience. It should be able to provide enough information to generate interest and give details as to where to follow up on this information. The size is just as important as the design. A good design is visually appealing on its own but it all depends on how visible that good design is. In recent decades, large format billboards and banners with large fonts have gained popularity.

The Little Things (That Make You Pretty)

Most women spend a lot of time perfecting their skin, their hair and their bodies. Most likely, the same number of women also spends a lot of time filling their wardrobe with all kinds of apparel which will make them look better over-all. However, this over-all prettiness actually means nothing when you forget about these four little things that wave like a miniature flag of warning when you don’t take care of them.

1. Clean fingernails. Ever wonder why New York women spend a lot on maintaining their manicures? This is the reason: the fingernails often define how neat a person you are. So take care of your fingernails. And no, they need not sport the latest nail art fashion or the wildest color. You can do with just neutral shades, a colorless coat or simply, short and clean nails. Very no-fuss, that is.

2. Neatly tweezed eyebrows. Okay, threading will do wonders too. The thing about eyebrows is that they can have the power to change your face. A little alteration on its arch, some over-tweezing or application of holding gels can spell a lot of difference. Have your eyebrows done by an esteemed expert at an esteemed salon. The initial cost may be high but with proper maintenance you will save bucks and save yourself from humiliation.

3. Clean feet. What good are pretty shoes if you don’t have pretty feet? A lot of men actually find clean and pretty feet very alluring among women. So pay attention on these because they’re what people will be looking at after they check out your legs.

4. Posture. Tell me you don’t need attention flags just to remember this. Always carry yourself well. Don’t slouch and keep your chin held high. That’s the reason why models always look pristine even if they are not that pretty. They advertise a confident personality, a person so sure of one’s self. Now tell me if that’s not beautiful.

Airsofting as a Hobby

In early days, recreation with a gun usually means being on horseback, bringing along your rifle and having a pack of foxhounds. Nothing matches the satisfaction of bringing out the hunter in all of us. Today, the sport of hunting for game is reserved for the elite. Sometimes, it is banned because of the threat to endangered species. A good alternative to this is airsofting.

Airsofting is a relatively new sport in which you use replicas of actual firearms that shoot plastic pellets using pressurized air. Though not quite useful for hunting game, it lets you shoot the heck out of your friends in urban setting war game or skirmish. There are many ways to enjoy this new form of recreation. Aside from skirmishing, you can also play capture the flag where you try to, you guessed it, capture the opposing team’s flag by either taking it back to your base or hoisting your own team’s flag on a flagpole on their base.

Though shooting your friends with guns seems like a novel idea, it can’t be avoided that there would be accidents in the sport. It happens quite rarely and is often caused by improper usage of the airsoft gun, poor padding and protection or simply overdoing the whole “shoot your friends” thing.

So for those who want to unleash the hunter in all of us, of for those who want to express domination by capturing miniature flags, airsofting is for you!

Time For A Vacation

We all need one sometime: a nice relaxing weekend at the park, spring break for the college kids, and so on. We need a break from all the daily stress we experience from work, school, home or our own communities. Letting your stress mount over time won’t make you any more productive. In fact, it may even lessen your brain power because your brain keeps firing neurons all the time. One moment you’re quite energetic and creative, and later on you can’t even start a simple blog post.

Vacations give our heads a time to cool. This is also a way to gather inspiration. Have nothing to write on that next paper? Why not go on a road trip with your buddies and absorb some culture. Tired of repetitively punching in data in your spreadsheets? A simple walk outside the corporate office is enough. Try looking at the various flags waving around; Even our own red, white and blue American flag. Vacations need not be big events planned for weeks on end. In fact, that little coffee break you’re probably having right now as you’re reading this would count as a little vacation in itself. We don’t need to plan a long trip to

We all deserve a rest. We are not wired to be machines that are 100% productive 100% of the time. We all have our downtimes. And if we don’t cater to ourselves, we would end up blocking our own creative paths. Don’t wait for your brain to raise a black racing flag to send you to the mental pitstop.

Writer’s Block

We all hit that time when we just can’t write about anything at a given time. You must be thinking, “uh oh, looks like my brain hit a black racing flag and its headed for the pitstop”. That being said, our brain is like a high performance racing car. Like all racing cars it could also experience problems and setbacks along the way. No race car is exempt from a low fuel supply or worn out tires just like our brain is not exempt from things that would possibly slow down, or possibly even damage it. How do we do a “tire change” with our brain? Here are some examples to refresh our creative and logical functions.

First of all, try working at a different place. If you have a laptop, go to a place like a park or a rooftop of a building. New information always stimulates our brain to be more active. Not only does it refresh our minds, but it also gives us more ideas to possibly inspire us. Another idea is to work at intervals. If you have been working for, say, an hour, always make sure that you have a 5-10 minute break for each or that you work. This gives your mind time to refresh for another hour of working. This method buys you more time before stress seeps in and blocks your creativity and keeps you working like a well oiled machine. Lastly, keep reading! Sometimes people recycle the same thoughts and words over and over again until they exhaust the ways to use it. Read as much as you and when you see a word you don’t understand, look it up and start using it.

Writer’s block doesn’t only affect writers. It can affect all of us whenever we do creative work like drawing, writing songs and so on. Just learn to keep your mind running like an efficient F-1 engine and you’ll have no problems reaching the checkered flag.
