Many American citizens are unable to name all the 13 original colonies of the country. However, there are some that know better about the US flag. Many people call the banner the Stars and Stripes. Many actually do not know why the blue, white and red colors were picked and why the stars and stripes were present in the first place. Betsy Ross is created for coming up with the first layout of the US flag. However, others debate that the design was already available and featured by other independent makers at the time. The US flags of today feature 13 stripes in red and white. These represent the pioneering colonies. The blue field where the fifty stars are found represent the fifty states of America. Throughout the decades, the design of the flag has changed and transformed into the current one we see today.
There is no official design known as the very first flag. However, Betsy Ross was one of the first to be recognized to have created the original design. There are also other US flags made by Cowpens, Francis Hopkinson and Brandywine. These were available at the same period and are quite similar to Betsy’s design except that it was already made years earlier. The stars, however, were arranged in a line instead of a circle. The colonies represented by the stars grew so the design also changed with it.
Later on, the colonies turned into states so the total number of stars on the blue field changed from 13 to 50. The Revolutionary War and American independence caused the growth of the number of stars on the banner. Vermont and Kentucky were among the new states added, making the stars on US flags total 15 at the time.
