The Background and Importance of the Brazilian Flag

There was an official act that established the Brazilian flag that you see today. The colors of many old Brazilian flags were retained on the new design to stand for the many glories and victories that the country experienced in the past.

Green and yellow are the main colors you will see on the flag. Many people say that these stand for the forests, minerals, gold, wealth and natural beauties of Brazil. Blue stands for the sky while the 27 stars represent all its states. The stars are also arranged with special reference to the sky of Rio de Janeiro, specifically when the Republic of Brazil was officially proclaimed at 8:30 a.m. on November 15, 1889.

The federal states are all represented on the white stars on the flag. There are different sizes on the flag, arranged into nine constellations. In the middle of the blue circle you will find the South Cross. It was placed there since the cross is visible from all states in the country.

November 19 marks the Flag Day of Brazil. People wave and celebrate the flag during the special holiday at noon. The flag is also lighted at night. There is an official hymn for the banner written by Olavo Bilac. Francisco Braga prepared the tune and the hymn was first heard in 1906.

The Brazilian flag tells a lot of stories about the history and endeavors of its citizens for many decades. The flag is also raised on several occasions, big and small, at state buildings.
