Canada’s Remembrance Day Traditions

Remembrance Day is celebrated in Canada. During this day they have various events and presentations. They usually have this celebration at the National War Memorial which is located in Ottawa. The sound of the Carillon often signifies the start of the event.  While the carillon plays in the background special guests, Royal Canadian Legion, Crown Ministers, Canadian Forces, Diplomatic unit of Ottawa and state assistant will parade. The Canadian flag  is showcased in different parts of the place while the anthem “O Canada” is played. Just like other ceremonies the people offers poppies on the Unknown Soldier’s tomb as sign of commemoration. Garlands are also offered by the Silver Cross sisters for mothers who have children sent to fight overseas.

Likewise in the United States, Veterans Day is celebrated as commemoration for soldiers who bravely fought for their country during World War one. Remembrance Day in Canada is a special event for central government workers and sometimes considers as general event depending on the area. In Ontario and Quebec, Remembrance Day is considered as a special holiday. Atlantic and Western Canada on the other hand considers it as a General Holiday.

Remembrance Day is a day to pay respect to the people who lost their lives in battle. For those family who still has loved ones who are soldiers overseas then it is their tradition to send custom flags to also show their support. The Canadian Flag will be showcased in various locations in the venue. Like other armed commemorations, people will offer poppies on the Unknown Soldier’s tomb. Garlands are also placed on the foot to show remembrance of mothers who have children sent to fight abroad.

The United States also have a similar event like the Remembrance day which they call as the Veteran’s Day. Both days are celebrated for the soldiers who fought during World War One. Remembrance Day in Canada is a special day for central government workers but in some locations it is considered as general event. It is a Special Day in Ontario and Quebec while it is a general holiday for Western and Atlantic Canada.

The main reason for celebrating Remembrance Day is to honor those brave individuals who died in battle. It is also an opportunity taken by many to send gifts such as bears, cards, pictures and custom flags to those soldiers abroad. The Memorial of the National War in Ottawa is where most events of the Remembrance Day of Canada are commemorated. There are official activities which are part of the celebration that will include some performances. One of these performances is the playing of the Carillon. The sound of the Carillon signifies the start and representatives from different Canadian sectors which includes the Canadian forces, government officials such as the Ministers of Crown, diplomats, state assistants Royal Legion and pertinent guest will commence. The magnificent Canadian flag will be raised and waved by the onlookers and official bearers of the flag to the melody of “O Canada” being played on the background.  Not unlike formal occasions, the gun salute is also present as well as ringing of bells and playing of bugle. The Unknown Soldier’s Tomb is paid with respect by placing of poppies. Garlands are also placed by the Silver Cross Sister at the memorial to commemorate the mothers who bravely sent their sons off to fight for the war.

The celebration of Remembrance Day in Canada is comparable to the Veterans Day in the United States.  Both special holidays is celebrated to honor the World War I soldiers. This holiday is considered general or special depending on the area. The western part and Atlantic Canada considers Remembrance Day as a general holiday while Quebec and Ontario considers it as a detailed holiday. It is special holiday for government employees.
