Flag for Food Program

The United Nations have had a positive impact to the world due to its various humanitarian responses to the needy. You can see the United Nation’s flag flying in and around the hotspots of the world; to the different NGO’s that has been recipients to the UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) assistance on the plight of children and mothers; to the development of science and technology that will benefit mankind ultimately; and even to the use and control of nuclear energy in order not to jeopardize the existence of mankind.

But, what really amazes us is the UNICEF’s desire to feed the hungry children of the world, and mind you it’s not really that easy, considering that it could reach over a billion individuals to feed. They can be seen in the far-flung barrios in Asia, to the crevices of the poor in Africa; and even to war ravaged areas, not minding the risk just to extend help to those who really are suffering.

The program of the UNICEF is focused primarily on five priorities; basic education and gender equality (including girl’s education); child development and survival; child protection from violence, exploitation and abuse; HIV/AIDS and children; and policy advocacy and partnership for children’s right.

Not only is UNICEF out to avert the incidence of famine, but are as well fine-tuned to the new challenges like the spread of AIDS/HIV to the children in areas like Africa and India. They have channeled their thrusts to education of children, because only the right amount of knowledge can transform and correct taboo’s practiced in society.

For their effort, they have raised a total of 2.78 billion dollars for 2006, to help them fund the different projects worldwide.

Visual Distress Signals

What are visual distress signals and where are they used?

The United States is blessed with an abundance of coastal waters, the great lakes, territorial seas and recreational boats ply these routes. When boats crisscross these water lanes, accidents are bound to happen and it is on this premise that a federal requirement and safety tips for recreational boats have in issued.

First on its list is the visual distress signal that include pyrotechnic based and second the non-pyrotechnic based visual distress signals. What comes in handy is the orange distress flag, the least used of the signals but is still required because when other system fails this could still be relied on. But this is only used during the day and it must at least be 3 x 3 feet with a black square and ball on an orange background. It should meet Coast Guard requirement in 46 CFR 160.072.

The distress flag must be visually distinctive when attached and waved on a paddle, boathook, or simply flown from a mast. And also it could be effective as an attention getter in an emergency if it is attached to balloons, kites, and floating streamers.

At night, the orange distress flag will have to give way to a much more effective way of sending distress signals, like the flares (pyrotechnic based) – could be red flares, hand held or aerial; orange smoke, hand held or floating; and through launchers, most commonly the aerial red meteors or the parachute flares.

In the absence of flares, electric light signals will have to be used by flashing the internationally accepted SOS distress signal.

Flag for Peace

Remember Kosovo? Who would forget the war torn images as vividly shown in footages presented by the world media for us to see. Kosovo was a bloody mess as ethnic violence pervaded the streets and it could not be described even as just war but chaos to the first degree. Violence was everywhere and 280,000 of those who could not bear the atrocities fled the area for safety to some havens.

Then to ease up violence a convoy of UN Peacekeepers entered the picture, all vehicles carried the United Nation’s flag and the forces were dressed in combat fatigues topped with the now famous blue beret or helmets. What the hell are these UN personnel doing in Kosovo? They will be sitting ducks and easy targets for snipers on both sides, what were they thinking and hope to accomplish?

The UN Security Resolution No.1244 of 1999 has authorized the deployment of the elite NATO led UN Peacekeepers that placed Kosovo under transitional administration to avert further violence and bloodshed. This move was made and mandated by the UN Charter, after a Peace Treaty has been signed and put into effect by the contending parties. The main duty of the peacekeepers is to monitor and document whatever violations committed by the parties to the peace accord.

Well as it turned out, a semblance of peace has been attained and ironed out and moves are underway for the withdrawal of the UN Peacekeepers and administration will be given back to the local authorities.

Lets pray for the successful transition of government administration in Kosovo, and that the UN brokered peace initiative stays. Lasting peace is well on the way, finally.
