The Background of Mexican Flags

Every 24th of February the people of Mexico celebrates their country’s flag day or better known as the “El Dia de la Bandera”. This is one of the unique national holidays of Mexico that is celebrated to reminisce history and bring back the spirit of patriotism and love for their country.

Songs such as The Oath to the Flag and The Salute to the Flag have been composed specially for this flag day, initiated by former President of Mexico, namely Gen. Lázaro Cárdenas. Special radio and TV programs are broadcasted for this too.

The flag of Mexico comes in two variants used by the state and federal government units. The two flags are basically the same except for the design of the coat of arms.

Mexicans have very high respect for their flag just like most of the citizens of other countries. A flag protocol and guidelines were made by the government to make a standard etiquette on how to show respect for their flag. Mexicans are expected to abide to these rules by heart. The use of their flag is sacred and protected by law that is why a special permission must be made to broadcast anything related to it.

Mexican flag must be always in good condition. It must not be raised torn, faded nor be seen dragged on the ground.  Should there be any irregularities found, the flag must be immediately replaced.  Once a flag is found to be in bad shape, it must be destroyed in a manner that is private and dignified.
