The Symbols on Pirate Flags of the Past

Many people are fond of pirate flags. These were actually very rampant in ancient times, especially in places like the Caribbean and Martinique Bay. Pirate ships would cross the high seas featuring the deadly flags on top of very tall flagpoles to scare enemies.

The Jolly Roger pirate flag is the most famous which featured the skull and cross bones. Several other pirate ships also featured other kinds of flags that equally evoked fear to their opponents. Flags used at sea serve as indicators for other vessels. People can easily spot a friendly or ally ship nearby. The flags can also be used as a sign, requiring the other vessel to surrender or face death.

Pirates over time began featuring their own flags. There were rules on how to handle and raise the flags. There were also a variety of designs and symbols introduced. The common color was either black or red, signifying death or blood. The black background was very common among pirate flags. There were also other colors introduced like gold, white and blue depending on the pirates.

Red means blood for many pirate ships since they intend to intimidate other ships they come across with. Over time, the black canton became more common, which brings out the white skeletons and skulls better. Pirate flags also added other images and figures on the flags like daggers, swords, gold, an hourglass and wine. All of these have special meanings particularly to the pirate captain heading the ship.
