The Background of the Chinese National Flag

china-flag-4The Chinese national flag is one of the most famous flags at present. It features a solid medium red background and there are five gold stars present on the upper left portion. One of the stars is larger than the other four and is situated on the far upper left portion. The four remaining stars have the same size and create a semi-circle around the big star. The flag of China actually represents the country’s past and principles.

The flag has several representations. The big gold star is known to stand for the leadership of China’s communist party. The four smaller gold stars are said to stand for the four general social classes in China, namely, the peasants, the workers, the bourgeoisie and the capitalists. The stars on the flag have the gold color to stand for the skin tone of the Chinese people. The red background represents the communist government.

The present Chinese flag was actually established in 1949 after the civil war ended in the country. In July 1949, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference started a competition where citizens were invited to provide concepts on the new flag design. The contest was intended to boost the morale of the populace. There were over 3,000 designs submitted. Zen Liansong, an economist, ultimately won the big contest. His design was approved by the Chinese government in September 1949. However, his design was altered slightly, because the original concept included a hammer and sickle inside the large star. This was removed before the flag was displayed.
