In Africa, you will find a state called Liberia. It was established during the 1800s and made to offer new opportunities and more importantly, a place to live for slaves who were freed from their previous masters. Many people wanted to go back to Africa after serving in different areas of the world.
Liberia was freed in 1847 and featured a banner that looked a lot like the Old Glory. However, the United States flag features thirteen stripes, while the Liberian flag only has eleven. These eleven stripes stood for the eleven men who signed and approved the declaration of the independence of the country. The Liberian flag also features a single five-pointed star against a blue background compared to the fifty stars of the U.S. flag.
The white star against the blue background represents Liberia being the only free black African country at the time. The blue background represents the African continent. You will still see the flag waved and displayed in several places around the world. These are raised on top of wooden poles and other high places.
You will notice a dove with a scroll in the official coat of arms. This represents peace and goodwill. There is also a yellow rising sun and a ship moving towards land. These elements stand for the rebirth of a country. The hoe and plow stand for labor and hard work. The palm tree represents fertility. There is also a message saying “The love of liberty brought us here.” At the bottom of the Liberian flag, you will read “Republic of Liberia”.
