The main flag of France features three colors arranged in a vertical manner namely red, white and blue. In French, the banner is called many names like “les couleurs”, “drapeau tricolore” or “drapeau francais”. In the past, French symbols were also placed on the flag like the fleur-de-lis or lily. The flower was present during the 12th century. The French flag was usually presented during the Revolution. For many years, more people have come to know the flag as a symbol of freedom.
The red and blue colors on the flag actually stand for the city of Paris. The white color is known to stand for the Bourbon Dynasty. Other colors were also shown on the flag which represented different virtues and principles during the French Revolution such as liberty, brotherhood and equal rights. The colors and look for the flag were said to come from the Dutch flag. There were also representations that followed on the banner in the next several decades.
In many French schools, the French flag is known to represent the three key estates of the old regime. The white color used to represent the clergy, the red color stood for the noble families and the bourgeoisie was represented by the blue tone. The white color is also associated to Joan of Arc at times.
The blue and red colors on the flag have become quite common since 1358 and these represented the city of Paris. Etienne Marcel also featured these colors during the Parisian revolution. In 1794, the red, blue and white tricolor was featured by the Convention. The white is said to have been added by Lafayette.
