Certain countries are interesting because of the richness of their traditions and cultural feasts. Mexico is a country that is no exception for they are known from their colourful and festive traditions especially those related to Catholic celebrations. Mexicans show their gleeful vibe through colourful decorations that can encourage everyone around, even tourists, to celebrate with them. Mexicans use colourful fabrics that are cut out to form buntings, banners or flags called papel picado or perforated paper. This is a tradition that has been passed from generations to generations and history say it started from the time of Aztecs.
The flags used by Aztecs are made by a rare material called amatl, a type of paper found in Mexico in the pre-Hispanic times. This vintage looking material was used for decorations having images of Aztecs gods that they worship during their time. These types of flags were often used in important ceremonies.
In time, Chinese influenced a new method of cutting paper flags to Spaniards. These have made flags look stylish and modern as now being seen a decorations in Catholic celebrations.
The design of flags in Mexico was often seen with religious symbols such as angels and crosses, and other figures such as animals, skeletons and important historical symbols. Images of the Virgin Mary are a popular flag design. Certain colour codes are being followed as well like during feast days of patron saints wherein flags are in yellow and white. Flags are significant in Mexico as they represent important celebrations.
