A lot of people wish that patriotism would continue in the generations to come, so children have to be the focal point in teaching the virtue. Many parents and teachers know that children who learn about patriotism at a young age are more likely to become good leaders and role models in society. There are many programs and modules that can help young minds learn how to appreciate the history and values behind the freedom that Americans enjoy. Teachers can use movies, magazines, books, posters and other materials to educate kids about the benefits of patriotism and how it should be continued in the following decades. Some activities used to be taught in schools to instill the value, but these seemed to have been removed in modern educational institutions.
Patriotic activities will develop leaders that will also help shape the nation. The programs are intended for children to appreciate how freedom and independence come at a price. Children may initially be taught about the founding fathers and the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives for the independence of the United States. Teachers can also showcase monuments, statues and other landmarks that refer to the liberty of the country, such as the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Statue of Liberty and the White House. Children can also be presented with a world flag that will help them learn more about the country’s culture and background.
Kids should be taught about the various national holidays that Americans celebrate each year like Constitution Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day among others. These are the best times to talk about the past leaders of America and how each contributed to society in their special way. Children can be told stories about the past wars that shaped America into such a great country.
Children can also learn patriotic songs, literary works, art and other creations that will help them appreciate patriotism more. There are various books, materials and displays that will teach kids how to be more passionate about their country. A powerpoint presentation will also be effective for children because they like visual displays. Present the world flag of the United States as well as the state flags. Tell them about the colors and symbols of each and how the flags came into being. Children love to hear stories about each state and how the leaders of the past helped these gain independence.
You can also form groups and organizations that promote patriotism. Children can discuss with others and adults about the history of America. They should memorize some of the poems, songs and names of leaders so that they can spread the word to others.
Teach your kids about the background of the United States of America and witness them become patriotic leaders in the years to come. Keep the lessons interactive and get feedback from your kids after each session. Have them invite their friends too and think of creative ways to grab their attention.
