Is it a common knowledge of people in America about the names of the original thirteen colonies or what about the history of flag of America? When asking about the story of the US flag, the first few words that usually come out from people are the ‘Stars and Stripes’ without further explanation about it nor sharing more information about other aspects about the flag.
One of the most popular facts about the flag is the person behind the first design who is Betsy Ross. This is something that is learned in elementary school. However, this information is not accurate because there were others who created similar designs during the same time. It was only Betsy Ross who is credited about the design the most. Francis Hopkinson is another popular name linked to US flag. He creaded a design similar to Betsy’s but in an earlier date, however, the stars formation were linear and not circular.
The thirteen alternating stripes in colors red and white represents the original thirteen colonies of US. The fifty starts in the blue field represent the fifty current states of America. The number of stars has changed throughout the history of the country, resulting to a change of design as well.
When the colonies evolved and changed into states the flag design became official. Instead of changing the entire design as more states were added the stars were added. As what can be seen today, the US flags evolved to a flag with fifty stars and thirteen red and white stripes.
