The Meaning of Liberian Flags

If you visit Africa, you might be familiar with the state of Liberia. The country was created and established in the 1800s when the American Colonization Society though of providing land for freed slaves where they can live peacefully and abundantly. When slaves were freed all over the world, they wished to return to their native land.

Liberia was declared independent in 1847 and shortly thereafter, the official banner was raised which some might notice to be a lot like the Star Spangled Banner. The U.S. flag features thirteen stripes, but the Liberian flag only has eleven. These stripes were used to stand for the very people who signed the declaration of independence of the state. The U.S. flag might have fifty white stars but the Liberian banner only has a single five-point star against a dark blue background.

The white star represents Liberia, being the only free nation in black Africa at the time. the blue background stands for the continent of Africa itself. You will find the flag raised in different parts of the country and the world. Wooden flagpoles and other versions are used to display the banner.

There are also several elements found on the coat of arms of Liberia such as the dove with the scroll, a plow, hoe, the yellow rising sun and the ship approach the shore. These stand for the birth of the independent country. Palm tree stands for abundance and fertility. You will also notice some messages on the Liberian flag like “The love of liberty brought us here.” and “Republic of Liberia”.
