Since it started during the 1980s in the Midwest, cornhole tossing has gone through some changes. The game used to be played by college students in celebration of football season. Today, tailgate parties, backyard events and sports bar activities feature cornhole as a tradition, to be enjoyed by family and friends, regardless of gender and age. The game has become more famous in recent years, especially after the creation of its official group called The American Cornhole Association. Some people take the game various seriously and are very meticulous when it comes to cornhole bags.
The original cornhole bags actually contained corn which is why these were named such. There are some disadvantages in using corn as filling. First, it is organic and edible, which means that insects and rodents will detect it eventually and chew the insides. Second, corn deteriorates over time, being a perishable item. Compared to newer versions of the cornhole bag that includes plastic pellets and beads, the traditional creation only lasts a few weeks, while newer types can stay good for many months. Check for any signs of deterioration and make repairs as necessary.
Water and moisture will also hasten the deterioration of the corn within the bags. You have to keep it safe inside a dry and cool place. Some people do not have enough storage space to keep all the cornhole bags so they have to keep buying more filling if these are chewed on by small animals. Those that invest in newer types will find the approach only more expensive at first but since the material lasts a long time, they get to save more in the process.
