The Flag Bearer in Brazil

There are a number of defining aspects that differentiate a flag bearer from regular samba dancers in a carnaval parade. For instance, the costume of the flag-bearer is quite unique and features a wide array of colors and attractive materials. Other dancers in the line will usually feature the same tones and design. Carnaval investors also spend a fortune trying to come up with a beautiful costume for the Porta-bandeira during her presentation. The dress will definitely grab attention and put her in the middle of the action. The samba-school puts great emphasis on how their flag-bearer looks and will put in the needed amount just to make it as glamorous as possible. Some of the biggest samba schools spend so much for the creative costume.

Another thing to notice about the Porta-bandeira in Brazil is her performance. Her moves will resemble that of a ballet dance but with spinning and swirling motions. The elegant gestures are also compounded by other graceful motions, using her arms to fully showcase the flag. A judging panel will be available to score her in terms of grace, attitude and overall presentation. The flag-bearer needs to carry the flag for the rest of the parade. In Rio de Janeiro, the flag-bearer can also be observed kissing and showing respect to the flag of her respective samba school. Another person is also important in the flag presentation in Brazil, called the Mestre-Sala. Each individual has his or her own set of roles during the festivities.
