A lot of people have already seen and are quite familiar with the Australian flag. It is among the most recognized in the world. The banner has a blue background and the Union Flag can be located on the upper left corner. There are six stars on the flag too. The symbols are very similar to the official flag of the United Kingdom and there are facts to discover about the Australian banner that will enhance people’s knowledge everywhere.
The flag you see today actually started from a 1901 contest in Australia. During that time, Australia officially became a country. The contest stipulated that the winner would bring home 25 pounds for coming up with the best flag layout and design.
The Australian flag went through several adjustments through the decades but these are usually minor so many did not realize the changes until many years later. The minor changes were also introduced for different reasons but the overall character and uniqueness of the banner did not change.
The rules of the contest stated that some aspects should be available on the banner. First, the Union Flag should be present, since Australia was part of the British regime. It was a sign of loyalty and respect to the mother country. However, many people today say that there is no more need for the Union Jack on the Australian flag because it is already independent. The six stars on the flag represent the six colonies that collaborated to create the great country of Australia. Australia is still highly connected to Britain which may be why the Union Jack symbol is still present.
