How to Fold the American Flag Properly

When an American flag is not in use the US military practice shows that it must be folded into a triangular shape. A guideline thru the Flag Code is set up by the military for all US citizens to follow in order to maintain the order and respect for the flag. Although there is no definite guideline on how to properly fold a flag triangularly, below are simple steps on how to do it.

1.     Hold the ends of the flag with another person holding at the other end. Hold the flag at the waist level and make sure it is parallel to the ground.

2.     Fold the flag into half lengthwise.  Securely hold the top and bottom edges.

3.     Fold the flag into lengthwise again ensuring the blue field to be seen on the outer side.

4.     Begin making a triangular fold at the end edge portion. The striped corner of the edge must meet the top edge of the flag.  Start the fold from the left side to the right.

5.     Fold the outer end moving inward which is parallel to the open edge. This will form the second triangle.

6.     Continue to make triangular folds until reaching the other end of the flag. This usually takes 13 folds. Just in case when the last fold leaves a small remnant that cannot take part of a neatly folded triangle, tuck it into the preceding fold.

7.     Keep the blue field of stars visible when the flag is completely folded triangularly.

It is advisable to keep the folded flag stored in a flag case.
