Presenting the State Flag of New Jersey

Many individuals continue to argue and talk about the proper presentation and use of the United States national flag. In many occasions, state flags are not given the respect these deserve even though these stand for a lot of America’s rich history and culture. For instance, the New Jersey state flag is very reminiscent to the war flag used during the Revolutionary War. It was first used in March 1896 and features a buff color which is quite different compared to other state flags.

George Washington ordered the soldiers in New Jersey on October 2, 1779 to wear blue uniform with facings in buff tone. During that period, only George Washington’s uniform, as well as the uniforms of other generals and high ranking officials featured the facings with the buff color. After some time, the flags of the troops were also ordered to use the same buff color as the facings. This is the origin of the buff color used on the New Jersey flag.

On February 28, 1780, the officers in Philadelphia ordered that the coat facings of all soldiers should also be in the same color as the buff state flag. The New Jersey flag also has other features, such as the two women which represent freedom and agriculture. The knight helmet represents combat readiness while the blue shield with three ploughs represents farming. A boundary is present on the flag as well, created by the official motto of New Jersey. It reads “Liberty and Prosperity”. The year 1776 is also shown which celebrates the independence of the United States.
